Fibromyalgia - how can we help ourselves with cannabis and its extracts?

Fibromyalgia

Unexplained pain, frequent fatigue, and insomnia are the first signs of fibromyalgia. Fibromyalgia syndrome is medically classified as a rheumatic condition in a group outside of rheumatoid arthritis. It is a medical condition in which an individual is severely tired and feels widespread pain in the muscles, ligaments and tendons that make up the soft connective tissue of the body. In this disease, the joint is never inflamed, so it is classified as soft tissue rheumatism.

Most affected individuals experience pain throughout the body, with an imbalance in the functioning of the nervous, immune, and hormonal systems. All these systems are connected to the endocannabinoid system, which takes care of the balance and normal functioning of all other systems in the body.

Fibromyalgia can affect all age groups, including children and adolescents. It is estimated that 2-8% of the world's population is affected. Women are significantly more susceptible to the disease compared to men. The disease was first defined in 1990 and its properties were updated in 2011. Diagnostic criteria and methods of treatment have not yet been professionally standardized.

Najnovejše raziskave na tem področju so pokazale, da vzrok za bolečine izhaja iz centralnega živčnega sistema, kjer pri prevajanju čutnih zaznav nastajajo spremembe.

Symptoms

The most common signs of fibromyalgia include fatigue, lack of energy, morning drowsiness, punctate muscle aches and pain in the neck, shoulders, lumbosacral spine and knee, as well as sleep problems, memory impairment, concentration, depression and anxiety. Less common signs are dry mouth, nose and eyes, sensitivity to the cold and urinary problems.

There is currently no cure for fibromyalgia, but alternative medicine can help. It is a chronic disease that in most cases is never completely eliminated. Many symptoms can be partially or at least alleviated enough to make it possible to live normally with the disease. Because there are so many symptoms, a lot of things need to be improved as a result, and above all, you need to learn to live with the disease. The primary goal of treatment is pain relief.

Endocannabinoid system

The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is one of the most important systems in our body, which by its action takes care of the balance in the body, which is its main task. In addition, it takes care of the normal and smooth functioning of other human systems (immune, intestinal, nervous, etc.). In the event of a disturbance of balance in the body, our EKS ensures that the body returns to balance. It enables communication between cells, tissues and organs and takes care of our health. It offers us protection and preventively protects us from external negative influences.

ECS is present in all mammals. It consists of endocannabinoids (anandamide and 2-arachidonoylglycerol), receptors (CB1 and CB2) and enzymes.

Cannabis, phytocannabinoids and self-medication

Endocannabinoids are molecules produced by the body itself. Phytocannabinoids, on the other hand, are molecules produced by plants. These molecules are very similar in composition, so phytocannabinoids also bind to endocannabinoid receptors in our body and thus help our ECS when it is weakened. This is especially important in cases where it is a chronic disease and it is very important to restore balance in our body.

Recently, or in the last few years, there has been a great deal of research in this field in the cannabinoid story, including the topic of fibromyalgia.

It is necessary to look for natural analgesic agents that have sedative/calming and analgesic effects. In cannabis, these are terpenes, and cannabinoids increase their effect. Otherwise, cannabinoids take care of our endocannabinoid system, which is the basis for all other systems in the body (immune, intestinal, etc).

Terpenes, essential oils, aromatherapy and alternative medicine are all interconnected. Terpenes are the constituent molecules of essential oils, aromatherapy works by inhaling these volatile molecules, and alternative medicine encompasses all of these areas. In cannabis, terpenes are constituent parts of the plant (flavonoids in addition to cannabinoids), but each strain contains different terpene molecules or ratios of individual molecules, as do cannabinoids and flavonoids.

Not all cannabis extracts are recommended and suitable for self-medication. The terpene composition in these preparations is important, because only with the right composition can we achieve the desired effects and consequently alleviate the pain that occurs to us due to the disease.

We can take a lot of care by changing our eating habits and diet, especially with the correct and appropriate use of ingredients that have analgesic properties.

Teas that are characterized by analgesic effects include ginger, sage, coriander, cloves, hemp). It is necessary to include as many spices as possible that have analgesic properties (ginger, turmeric, cayenne pepper, garlic, cloves, celery seeds, rosemary, nutmeg).

High content of terpenes are found in spices. These are plants that contain a large amount of essential oils/terpenes, from which people usually prepare essential oils and terpenes. All of these terpene molecules are found in certain varieties of cannabis, as well. This is why cannabis extracts and products can have very strong analgesic properties and effects.
