PMS - Pre-menstrual syndrome and cannabinoid relief

PMS - Premenstrual Syndrome and help with cannabis

PMS - Premenstrual syndrome

Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) is a cyclical occurrence of certain symptoms. It typically occurs between ovulation and the onset of menstrual bleeding, i.e. in the second half of the menstrual cycle. The pain that accompanies the symptoms can be severe enough to affect quality of life. Symptoms usually disappear within the first week after the start of menstruation. The pain accompanying the symptoms may be mild, moderate or very intense. They usually occur in the age group around 30 years. It is estimated that around 70% menstruating women suffer from the syndrome. Symptoms and pain usually worsen over the years and disappear after menopause.

Symptoms

Symptoms usually appear 5-7 days before menstruation. As the levels of hormones in the body rise, which occur at the onset of menstruation, the symptoms slowly subside. Typical PMS symptoms include:

  • back pain,
  • bloating,
  • headache,
  • irritability,
  • general tiredness,
  • breast tenderness,
  • insomnia,
  • muscle pain,
  • depression and anxiety,
  • alcohol intolerance,
  • the appearance of acne.

The most common symptoms include back pain, bloating, headaches, irritability and general tiredness. For women with the syndrome, the inclusion of natural, pain-relieving cannabis drops can be essential. For women with PMS, the inclusion of natural, pain-relieving cannabis drops may be essential to improve quality of life.

Causes

There are several causes responsible for the onset of PMS. Several theories have been proposed as to the causes of PMS. A drop in hormones in the body, chemical changes in the brain, genetic causes and the endocannabinoid anandamide are the most likely »culprits« for the onset of PMS.

Fluctuations in the amount of serotonin in the brain, also called the »happiness hormone”, can trigger symptoms such as fatigue, food cravings and depression.

PMS often occurs in several women within the same immediate or extended family.

The amount of the endocannabinoid anandamide present is highest in the uterus and links the endocannabinoid system in the body to the reproductive system. Estrogen increases the production of anandamide, also called »bliss molecules«, and cannabinoid receptors.

Diagnosis of PMS

Symptoms of PMS can be very similar to some other symptoms, including depression, anxiety, migraine, chronic fatigue syndrome and some rheumatological conditions. Of the women who see a doctor because of suspected PMS, the diagnosis is usually depression or anxiety. Symptoms of PMS usually occur only during a specific part of the menstrual cycle, thus distinguishing them from symptoms of depression and anxiety. A correct diagnosis is very important in order to find the appropriate and appropriate treatment.

Can I help myself with cannabinoids?

Cannabinoids affect the human endocannabinoid system (ECS), bringing it into balance and thus maintaining homeostasis. They are the main group of compounds present in cannabis. They are a heterogeneous group of compounds that share the common characteristic of binding to cannabinoid receptors in the body. They are basically divided into three groups according to their origin (endocannabinoids, phytocannabinoids and synthetic cannabinoids).

The ECS is a biological system or signalling mechanism present in all vertebrates. It consists of endocannabinoids (anandamide or AEA and 2-arachidonoylglycerol or 2-AG), receptors (CB1, CB2, and presumably GPR55 as a third) and enzymes. Receptors, which are an integral part of our cells, detect the amount or concentration of cannabinoids in the cells. Our brains also detect changes in the concentration of cannabinoids in our bodies and react accordingly. The role of the ECS in our bodies is very broad, as all cells contain receptors on their surface that sense the amount of cannabinoids present.

Because cannabinoids affect the ECS by restoring balance, and because the concentration of anandamide in the uterus is very high, cannabinoids can also relieve PMS symptoms.

Our company has developed a special formulation, which contains cannabinoids and terpenes in a ratio that reduces our pain. The right combination of cannabinoids and terpenes can have a significant impact on our quality of life. It works in a natural way and helps us to restore balance in the body. The drops were developed in collaboration with the International Cannabinoid Institute, ICanna.
