Terpenes and their \u201cEntourage\u201d effect with cannabinoids<\/h2>\n

Terpenes are one of the main compounds in every plant. They are the building blocks of essential oils. Their versatility begins in plants, where in certain cases they act as their natural protection against pests and parasites. They are volatile, aromatic molecules, with a strong smell and taste. They are compounds that have already been very well researched in the professional world. Various experts, scientists and researchers from all over the world have emphasized the pharmacological importance of terpenes and essential oils, which are the basis of aromatherapy, a very popular alternative holistic treatment in the world.<\/p>\n\n

The compelling smell and fragrance of cannabis depend on the predominant individual terpenes. Different varieties of cannabis have different cannabinoid profiles, as does the terpene profile.<\/p>\n\n

About 200 different terpenes have been found, described and researched in cannabis to date. Among them are monoterpenes, diterpenes and sesquiterpenes, all of which are characterized by a number of repeating units of the isoprene molecule, which is a structural feature of all terpenoid compounds.<\/p>\n\n

Research has shown that terpenes are healthy for humans, animals and also plants. One of the most prominent experts in the field of terpene research, dr. Ethan Russo <\/a> has published a number of expert articles on the topic of terpenes, cannabinoids and their positive effects on our body and is one of the most prominent experts in this field. He described one of the most extensive studies in the field of terpenes, health benefits and synergies in the British Journal of Pharmacology <\/em>, where he describes the action of terpenes found in cannabis.<\/p>\n\n

In plants, terpenes and cannabinoids are synthesized in trichomes by enzymes. Content or the concentration of individual molecules depends on several factors, and above all it is a function of genetics. Given the fact that cannabis is one of the most researched plants in the world, we can say with certainty that the ingredients of cannabis have a beneficial effect on our body.<\/p>\n\n

Cannabis is dominated by monoterpenes, limonene, pinene and myrcene, and sesquiterpene caryophyllene. Their content in trichomes is about 10%, which represents up to about 1% of the total flower.<\/p>\n\n

Pharmacologically, terpenes are versatile. They interact with cell membranes, neural and muscular ion channels, neurotransmitter receptors, G-protein-coupled (odorant) receptors, secondary migration systems, and enzymes. All terpenes are \"GRAS\" or. \"Generally Recognized as Safe\" as stated by the US FDA, Food and Drug Administration, which means that they are generally recognized as safe.<\/p>\n\n

Terpenes are therefore considered to be compounds to which they attribute positive effects on our health. In combination with cannabinoids, their effect is significantly increased, we are talking about the \"entourage\" effect. Hemp is therefore a plant that contains large amounts of cannabinoids, while cannabis also contains terpenes, which are otherwise found in other plants, such as limonene in citrus, pinene in pine, myrcene and humulene in hops, linalool in lavender, caryophyllene in pepper. , caryophyllene oxide in arnica, nerolidol in oranges, phytol in green tea, etc.<\/p>\n\n
