Cannabis is a plant with three subspecies, Cannabis sativa, Cannabis indica and Cannabis ruderalis, and is the most useful plant growing on earth. Cannabis was discovered by man more than 5000 years ago. The oldest site of hemp products dates back to 12 000 years ago and is located in what is now China. It is a versatile plant that is useful in its entirety. Hemp fibres were already used in Mesopotamia and ancient Egypt and were added to clay blocks for reinforcement. Hemp was widely used all over the world until the 20th century, and was also cultivated and popular on Slovenian soil.<\/p>

In the 1930s, cannabis was made an illegal drug in the USA. It was placed in the same group as heroin and cocaine, which led to its prohibition in 1937. It was declared a very dangerous drug and blamed for the insanity, violence and crimes that cannabis was responsible for. Today, we know that cannabis was dangerous mainly to the oil giants, the alcohol and tobacco industries and, above all, to the major chemical and pharmaceutical corporations.<\/p>

Cannabis is making a comeback after several years of prohibition in several areas. It is of interest to the construction sector, the food industry, recreational use, etc. It is widely used in many branches of medicine, including oncology. Cannabinoids<\/a>, terpenes<\/a>, flavonoids<\/a> and other active substances contained in cannabis are obtained mainly from the flowers and pollen of the plant, from which extracts, macerates, extracts and tinctures are prepared.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Medical uses of cannabis and its extracts<\/h2>

Cannabis and its extracts are used in several fields medicine<\/a>. Cannabinoids are the main group of compounds found in cannabis. In our cells, they bind to cannabinoid receptors, which are part of the human endocannabinoid system. They are basically divided into three groups according to their origin: endocannabinoids are synthesised in our bodies or in all vertebrates under certain conditions, phytocannabinoids are synthesised in certain plants and synthetic cannabinoids are synthesised artificially or in the laboratory. Most research on cannabinoids is in the field of palliative use, which includes the treatment of pain, nausea, insomnia and some other symptoms that negatively affect quality of life. Another well-studied area of cannabinoid use is in the field of neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease. A third well-studied area concerns disease states where the pathogenesis is linked to excessive signal transduction, such as epilepsy and neuropathic pain. Cannabinoid therapy has also shown very good results in the field of inflammatory diseases, such as multiple sclerosis, and in the field of rheumatological conditions, such as fibromyalgia. More and more research is also being directed towards the treatment of cancer symptoms and as an anti-tumour drug.<\/p>

There are a number of cannabis and cannabinoid-based medicines available in the world at the moment. These include Nabiximol, Dronabinol, Epidolex and others. There are also preparations made from the dried plant, such as Bedrocan, Bedrobinol and Bediol, and there are also magistral preparations. Cannabinoids and oncology<\/h2>

The use of cannabis and cannabinoids in oncology has been described in considerable detail in the literature. The number of published articles is increasing exponentially year by year. Cannabinoids are used as an adjunct to established medicines, especially in the treatment of advanced cancer. Cannabinoid support is mainly used in the area of more intractable symptoms and when conventional drugs cause unacceptable side effects. It is important to remember that cannabinoids are not a first-line treatment for any symptom. Cannabinoids and other cannabis preparations are included as a complement to conventional medicine when standard medicines are not sufficiently effective.<\/p>

Cannabinoid treatment should always follow the \u00bbstart slowly and adjust the amount\u00ab rule. Before starting cannabinoid treatment, there should be a frank discussion between the patient and the doctor about the meaning and the method of treatment. Be aware that the effects of treatment may only be noticeable after a few weeks and that side-effects may occur during treatment. Treatment usually starts with low entries<\/a> cannabinoids into the body, and the amount of cannabinoids introduced increases over time. The amount of intake depends mainly on the route of intake, the ratio of the individual cannabinoids and the medical condition being treated.<\/p>

There are several ways of getting cannabinoids into the body. There are a large number of different preparations on the market. On the shelves we find drops, sprays, resins, tips, concentrates for vaporisation, etc. However, it is also important to be aware of the fact that there are a huge number of products and that many of these products are made primarily for marketing purposes or to maximise the profits of those who market and sell them. These are, in particular, those products that are made from cannabidiol isolate and which have been scientifically proven to have a lower potency. Cannabidiol isolate is only one of the many active ingredients that are otherwise found in cannabis. When products contain a higher amount of cannabinoids, terpenes, flavonoids and other active ingredients, we are talking about full spectrum and the entourage effect. Such products have a higher utility, but they are also usually more expensive.<\/p>

In December 2019, the journal Oncology published Recommendation<\/a> for the use of cannabinoids in the management of cancer patients. In December 2018, the Experts Speak Out section of Okno magazine featured Summary<\/a> on medical cannabis.<\/p>
